Tethered capture

Connect a camera to your Mac over USB and shoot straight into your catalogue — each frame appears the moment it's taken. Lumidex Studio tethers over the industry-standard PTP protocol, so there's no vendor software to install.

Camera support

Tethering uses libgphoto2, the same open PTP/USB engine many tools rely on. A wide range of Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fujifilm bodies work, but tethering behaviour varies by model, so confirm your camera with the free trial before relying on it for a shoot. No camera to hand? The built-in simulator lets you try the workflow.

Connecting a camera

  1. Free the camera from other appsmacOS and apps like Photos, Image Capture or Lightroom can hold onto a connected camera. Quit them first so Lumidex Studio can take over the connection.
  2. Plug in and switch onConnect the camera over USB and turn it on. If macOS asks whether to allow the accessory to connect, choose Allow.
  3. Open the Capture moduleClick Capture in the module bar (⌥⌘2) and click Connect Camera. Once connected, the module shows the live tether bar and is ready to shoot.

Setting up the session

Before you start shooting, set up how frames are handled in the session bar:

  • Session name and file naming / numbering — how incoming shots are named and numbered.
  • Destination — the folder new frames are saved into.
  • Add to Library — catalogue each frame automatically as it arrives, so it's instantly visible in the grid.
  • Session Options and Tethered Capture Settings hold the rest (more naming options, and camera settings).

Shooting

Shoot on the camera as you normally would — every frame transfers straight into your library and appears in the grid. You can also adjust supported camera settings and fire the Shutter from the tether bar in the app. A full-screen preview (F) shows the latest frame large — useful on a second screen for a client or subject. When you're done, use the eject control to disconnect cleanly.

Mirror for a subject

Shooting someone facing the screen? View ▸ Enable Mirror Image Mode flips the live preview so they see a natural mirror image.
